Helping Your Teen (and you) Feel Safe and Confident in Transitions

Hello Reader,

Big changes can overwhelm your teen daughter (and anyone for that matter!) but there are simple to use, practical tools that can help them navigate with more calm and confidence. Here are three favourites of the teens I work with:

  1. Sensory Grounding
Whether it's 5 things they see, 4 they touch, 3 they hear, 2 they smell, 1 they taste OR spotting as much (insert colour here) in the room as they can in two minutes, OR naming fruit/cities/characters in alphabetical order. 1 to 2 minutes can calm racing thoughts.
  2. Breathing
Heart breathing- breathing in and out a little slower than you normally would while imagining the breath going in and out of your heart space for 2 minutes. Another favourite is 3 in and 3 out or square breathing (count of 4 in, hold for 4, release for 4 tracing 4 squares).
  3. Tiny Brave Steps
Breaking down intimidating tasks into micro-steps, like opening the book, asking one question, grabbing the favourite pen, or walking to the class. Small wins build momentum confidence fast.

Consider trying these this week and sharing one with your teen!

Do you have any other favourite strategies?

With gratitude,

Chantal

Hello Reader, When it comes to thinking about that next step for teens from Junior High to High School, I often hear questions like: ansitions aren’t just academic they challenge your teen’s social world too. Change is rarely easy, Readerwould you agree?
