My Brain Said "No" My Growth Said "Watch This!"

Thinking she would be rusty, the fears were rooting.

Hi friends,

One of the most common challenges I see in my work with teen girl athletes isn't the injury itself, it's the fear that can show up just before it's time to return.

"Will I get hurt again?"

"What if I'm rusty?"

"Has everyone else moved ahead while I've been recovering?"

These worries are incredibly normal. While doctors, physiotherapists, and coaches help athletes understand when their bodies are healing, there is another important piece of recovery that often gets overlooked: rebuilding trust in yourself.

In this week's blog, I explore the emotional side of returning to sport and why learning to tolerate discomfort may be one of the most valuable skills a young athlete can develop.

Did you know?

Confidence doesn't arrive at return to sport time. Confidence grows in the mind first and then is built through small steps, testing out some movement, trying the first drill, taking the first shift, and discovering that we can handle the uncertainty that comes with growth.

Whether your daughter is navigating an injury, a new school, friendship challenges, a big performance, or simply stepping outside of her comfort zone, the ability to move through discomfort rather than avoid it is a skill that will serve her for life.

In the blog, I cover:
• Why fear of re-injury and feeling rusty is so common
• The difference between discomfort and danger
• Why trust in ourselves matters just as much as trust in our recovery team
• A simple mindset shift that can help teens focus on what could go right

Can I handle this- the question to ask as a teen girl athlete navigating recovery

Do I like or dislike this thing happening? When your teen daughter is going through something difficult like an injury, a friendship struggle, a tough day at school, it’s natural for her mind to go straight to: What if this gets worse? What if I embarass myself? What if everything changes? And often, underneath those thoughts is another question: Do I like or dislike this thing happening? For an injured athlete, the answer is probably a resounding No. She doesn’t like missing practice.Or...

The Happiness Path for Teen Girls

Want to come along for the ride? Okay, maybe it’s the Pink Pony Club effect… But lately I’ve been thinking a LOT about teen girls having a place where they can be themselves, find their people, try new things, laugh a little louder, and discover just how capable they are. And it got me thinking… What if we created that place? 💗 wait. we did that! Something fun.Something meaningful.Something I really wish existed when I was a teenager. I’m not quite ready to reveal exactly where this PATH is...

We can care deeply and take care of ourselves too. When Your Teen Is Hurting, You Feel It Too Recently, I signed my teen up for a program he was genuinely excited about. As the date got closer, though, his excitement shifted to- What if there are too many people? What if I don’t like it? What if I feel uncomfortable? I was trying to listen, make space, and support him without letting his anxiety take over. And then I noticed something. My throat was getting tight, too. I was anxious. It...
