The Power of Presence

Have you ever noticed how something that feels hard to do alone can feel a little easier when someone you trust is beside you?

Maybe it's going for a walk when you're feeling overwhelmed, tackling a task you've been putting off, or having someone sit with you while you work through something uncomfortable.

Our teen girls experience this, too.

Whether they're recovering from a sport injury, navigating friendship challenges, cleaning their room, or working through a difficult season, sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing what to do. It's finding the courage or motivation to begin.

This is where body doubling comes in.

Body doubling is the practice of having someone present while you do something challenging. They don't need to fix the problem, offer advice, or even participate. Their presence can be enough to help us feel supported as we take the next step.

In The Happiness Path, I've often witnessed the power of girls encouraging one another through difficult experiences.

These moments remind us that resilience isn't always about pushing through on our own. Sometimes, it's about knowing we don't have to do everything alone.

A little something to try this week

The next time your daughter is struggling with something that feels hard, consider asking your version of:

“Would it be ok if I stayed beside you while you did it?”

You might be surprised by what that simple offer of presence can make possible.

Would you help us grow the raising resilient teen girls movement by sharing this with someone you care about?

With gratitude,

of emotions? We know the way out. Her emotions. My emotions. 😵💫 Sometimes parenting a teenage girl feels like living in a jungle. One minute she’s laughing with you in the kitchen. The next, she’s slamming a door.Twenty minutes later, she needs a ride to Starbucks. And somewhere in between, you’ve gone from “I love you so much” to “WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO ME LIKE THAT?!” Sound familiar? But here’s the question I really want you to think about: When your daughter has big feelings…how much do...

Passionate Aunt Shellie's got things to teach us about self-criticism

Is self-criticism her motivational tool? “She is so hard on herself.” If you have a teen daughter who participates in sport, performance, or competition of any kind (including grades, appearance, and friendships), you may have watched this happen: She can immediately focuses on what went wrong. “I should have landed that.”“That was terrible.”“I know I can do better.” And your instinct may be to jump in with: “But you did so many things well!” Of course you want to help her see the good. But...
