benched… and existential 🍧

A journey of rediscovering who she is as a whole person.

That part of sports injury recovery that we don’t talk about enough.

For many teen girl athletes, sport is about connection. Identity. Confidence. Routine. Belonging. It’s where they feel most alive.

So when an injury happens, whether it’s a concussion, torn ligament, stress fracture, or another setback, it can feel like their entire world shifts.

Not just physically.

Emotionally too.

Behind the rehab appointments and return-to-play plans, many girls are thinking:

Who am I without my sport?
Will I fit in anymore?
What if I never feel like myself again?

And honestly? These experiences make so much sense.

In this week’s blog, I explore the emotional and identity side of injury recovery including the grief, uncertainty, rediscovery, and growth that often happens beneath the surface.

One of the most important reminders in the piece is this:

Recovery can become more than getting back. It's a journey of rediscovering who she is as a whole person. Her worth has always been more than what she can do in her sport.

This blog is for:

  • Parents supporting an injured athlete
  • Professionals working with teens in recovery
  • Coaches wanting to better understand the emotional side of injury
  • Teen girls who feel lost, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves right now

If someone in your world is navigating sports recovery, I hope this feels like a deep exhale and a reminder that they are not alone.
