Toxic positivity just called🤙…

And we declined 📵Helping Her feel safe to feel it all!

Recently, I was asked a question I hear often from teen athletes:

“How do I stay positive during recovery?”

For many teen girls working through recovery of an injury, performance anxiety, and eating disorders, Positivity is often seen as the goal.

If they’re doing recovery “right,” they should be upbeat, grateful, and focused on the bright side. But in reality, this can create an exhausting internal dialogue:

Why am I still struggling? Shouldn’t I be handling this better?

When recovery doesn’t follow the timeline they hoped for, and it often doesn’t, this pressure can quickly turn into frustration, self-doubt, or even shame.

So if not positivity… what actually helps?

From what I see in my work, three things tend to support teens more deeply:

Trust.

Choice.

Belief.

Recovery is not a positive-only experience. There will be frustration, disappointment, and doubt and that’s not a sign something is wrong. It’s part of the process.

What matters most is helping teens stay connected to themselves through it.

You might even gently shift the conversation from:
“How do I stay positive?”
to
“What can I trust right now?”
“What’s one thing I can do today to support myself?”

Sometimes, supporting your teen isn’t about helping them feel better, it’s about helping them feel safe to experience it all.

Trust that the words weren't really gone. Trust that the message was still inside me. Trust that I could begin again. As I sat down to rewrite, I realized...
