Welcome back, This week, I’ve been thinking about recovery in a different way. At the horse rescue where I volunteer, many of the horses arrive underfed. Some come with neglected hooves, untreated dental issues, or visible signs of physical hardship. The care priorities feel obvious. Nutritious food. But one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned isn’t about feeding schedules or supplements. It’s about safety. Some of these horses startle easily, are wary of human touch and hesitate before stepping forward. Their bodies may begin to regain weight but their nervous systems don’t immediately feel safe. Early on in my volunteering, I remember standing beside one horse thinking, "What am I actually doing here?" I was simply being present. Extending a hand. Letting her decide when to move closer. Ruth (founder of Heel & Hoof Horse Rescue) and the other volunteers gently reminded me: this is part of recovery. Learning to feel safe again internally is foundational. And I couldn’t help but think about the teen girl athletes I work with. When a young athlete is injured, we rightly focus on physical healing. But just like the horses, safety isn’t restored simply because the body begins to recover. An injured athlete may look better on paper. But internally she may still feel: Uncertain. Recovery is nervous system repair. It’s rebuilding trust in the body, mind, in oneself. At the rescue, healing often begins with presence. In my work with elite teen girl athletes, it begins the same way. Steady support. And when safety returns, strength follows. Welcome, Whether you’re new here or have been part of the Raising Resilient Teen Girls community for a while, I’m really glad you’re here. Let me ask you something: If your daughter’s sport was suddenly taken away tomorrow… who would she feel she is? “I’ve always wanted to dance professionally. I don’t have a plan B.” My client sat nervously in front of me, chewing at the side of her cuticle. Her voice was steady, but her body wasn’t. And As we talked about surgery and recovery timelines, I...
WHAT WOULD YOUR DAUGHTER LOVE THIS YEAR? To walk into a room without overthinking where to sit? Easily start up a conversation with the person next to her? Finally try out for the team she’s been longing to join? Make genuine, sustainable friendships? Go for the gold in her endeavours and see confidence grow from there. Help her do it ALL! She CAN build that kind of confidence. It starts with shifting perspective, asking different questions, & taking ownership of the story she tells herself....
